hyperalgesia is an increased sensitivity to painful stimuli
allodynia - painful touch when there should not be pain
is pain felt with non-painful stimuli
affects 15-50% of people with neuropathic pain
Types of hyperalgesia
referred hyperalgesia
pain felt near a painful region
this could be observational when seeing someone else in pain
visceral hyperalgesia
a form of deep pain
Aetiology
NB. many of these causes can also cause
allodynia - painful touch when there should not be pain
excessive sensitivity of pain receptors
burns
trauma
cellulitis
toxins from bites or stings
diabetic neuropathy
opioid-induced hyperalgesia
systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
multiple sclerosis (MS)
CNS viral infections:
herpes zoster (shingles)

Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
migraines
complex regional pain syndrome
