Adverse effects

  • at least one species of Psilocybe in Australia may be fatal due to respiratory paralysis
  • “wood lovers paralysis”
    • a rare toxidrome, which has often been associated with the consumption of the psilocybin native Australian hallucinogenic fungi Psilocybe subaeruginosa (aka subs or gold tops) 11)12)
    • may cause leg weakness, difficulty swallowing and respiratory muscle paralysis and possibly death from respiratory failure
    • severe cases may require intubation
    • symptoms appearing most commonly within four hours of ingestion and generally improves after 24hrs
  • some other biologics may be present and cause adverse effects
    • psilocybin biosynthetic pathway intermediates
      • tryptamines baeocystin and norbaeocystin
    • some Psilocybe species also biosynthesize β-carbolines (e.g., harmane, harmine, norharmane), which inhibit the monoamine oxidase (MAO) family of enzymes responsible for degradation of serotonin, psilocybin, and related chemicals
    • phenylethylamine:
      • is associated with tachycardia, nausea, and anxiety
  • some other toxic mushrooms can be mistaken for psilocybin mushrooms
    • examples:
    • Galerina sp. - can be mistaken for Gymnopilus sp. (or other Psilocybe species if you are color blind) but has Amanita-like toxins
    • Pholiotina filaris - similar toxins to Galerina sp.
    • some other species stain blue on damage but via different chemicals:
      • Neoboletus luridiformis (Blue-Staining Boletes) - thicker stalk; mildly toxic causing gastroenteritis symptoms when raw, dried or improperly cooked for less than 15-20 minutes;
  • accurate identification of fungi to species often requires DNA sequencing combined with expert evaluation of salient micro- and macromorphological features
