AI fakes

Introduction

  • 2023 has brought us easy to achieve deep fake websites, emails, images, music, videos using AI

Before AI and we are already primed to accept fakes

  • prior to AI, marketing and social media and our apparent desire for “perfection” and intolerance of imperfections has already primed us for accepting manipulated media - often to the detriment of our self-image and mental health with young people in particular developing false ideas of how they should look and sound.
    • since the 1990s, we have seen a plethora of computer technologies contribute to this and now very little on the internet or in media can be trusted and this is BEFORE AI:
      • Photoshop has been perhaps the most abused technology for warping shapes of women and overly “cleansing” skin tones and imperfections
        • this has now further evolved to easy replacement of skies, removal of subjects in a image, etc
      • Autotune technologies “corrects” musical pitch in real time for most live performances
      • Pitching correcting software is used by music produces to snap vocals to the exact pitch - even though this may not be the pitch stringed instruments are playing
      • Youtube musician influencers take this a step further by not only applying pitch correction, additional vocal audio effects, but produce their videos of themselves miming to to this and decieving viewers that they are achieving all this in “zero-shot” live performances

AI deep fake video production

  • OpenAI SORA
    • txt 2 video - real looking video simulations of the world
  • Alibaba's Emote Live Portrait
    • combines vocal audio with a portrait to create a talking or singing video of that person all with appropriate emotive expressions and mouth movements
