VEMD diagnoses

introduction

  • this page is primarily to assist ED staff in completion of EDIS data
  • if the triage nurse assigns the data field “Injury/Poison” to YES, or the injury surveillance data is entered, then the diagnosis MUST be a “INJURY” type diagnosis (ICD10 code must start with either S or T) - you cannot enter a non-INJURY diagnosis and have it VEMD compatible.
  • if the triage nurse assigns the data field “Injury/Poison” to YES or you put an INJURY type diagnosis in, then the Injury Surveillance Data must be completed for VEMD compliance.

HAS EDIS diagnosis look up

  • the first thing to decide is whether or not the presentation is an INJURY/POISON/OVERDOSE/ALLERGY/IATROGENIC or not as you need to select the correct path to your look up options.
  • the following are included under the INJURY option:
    • injuries including self-harm
    • foreign body
    • envenomation
    • asphyxia, drowning
    • poisoning (non-bite) and overdoses
    • toxic or adverse effects of medications
    • “other specified nature of injury”:
      • allergic reactions / anaphylaxis
      • complications of catheters, contraceptive device, burst sutures or wound dehiscence
      • abused person syndrome
      • staff needlestick
      • unfortunately the HAS EDIS in Western Health does not give these additional options, you need to use Gary's HAS Tools to access these
    • “injury of unspecified nature”:
      • option to choose a body part only
  • interestingly, the following are available in the non-injury option but cannot be used if INJURY/POISON is selected by triage:
    • exposure to communicable disease
    • dermatitis includes allergic reaction to plants
    • post-operative obstetric wound infection
    • complication of caesarian wound
    • attention to or removal of surgical dressings and sutures
    • review following earlier treatment
      • if you use this code, you must also use “Additional diagnosis” and unfortunately, this cannot be an injury
    • sexual assault examination
    • Tetanus prophylaxis
    • Removal of ring stuck on finger
    • Removal of orthopaedic device or change of plaster, or plaster check
    • Aftercare following surgery

some useful diagnoses

  • “Attendance for specimen collection / Laboratory examination” - ie. useful for those just attending for a blood test
  • “Attendance for administration of antibiotics”
  • “Contraceptive management ”
  • “Results only”
  • “Issue of medical certificate”
  • “Issue of prescription / Issue of repeat prescription”

some difficulties in coding

  • needlestick injury
    • unless your system allows you to enter codes in “Other Injury” which includes “Staff Needlestick” - you have to decide either:
      • exposure to communicable disease - and then not use INJURY
      • superficial wound on INJURY
