pneumoconiosis
This is an old revision of the document!
pneumoconiosis
Introduction
- fibrotic lung diseases caused by inhalation of dusts in occupational exposures
- these are generally not treatable and may result in progressive pulmonary fibrosis and eventually respiratory failure, and in some cases may result in lung cancers (eg. mesothelioma with asbestosis)
examples
- byssinosis - due to factory workers of vegetable fibres such as flax (linen), cotton, hemp or sisal but the lung disease differs in pattern to the other pneumoconioses
-
-
- engineered stone workers - engineered stone has over 90% silica compared to ~30% for granite
- a total ban on the use and importation of engineered stone took effect in Australia from July 2024
- tunnel construction workers
- other exposures include aluminum, antimony, barium, graphite, iron, kaolin, mica, talc, among other dusts.
