Introduction
MAOIs were one of the early types of
antidepressants
but are now rarely used as there are safer alternatives for most people
the main risk is in the patient developing a
potentially life threatening
adrenergic storm crisis
in certain situations
:
eating foods containing particular amines such as cheeses, red wine (esp. if old MAOI or MAO-A inhibitor)
other medications being taking such as
carbamazepine
,
tapentadol
, etc.
