brexpiprazole

brexpiprazole (Rexulti)

Introduction

  • an atypical anti-psychotic medication
  • listed on Aust. PBS in late 2017 for Rx of schizophrenia, with the advantage of less weight gain or diabetic effects

Special precautions

  • hypersensitivity to brexpiprazole
  • dementia
  • liver disease
  • renal disease
  • dementia
  • diabetes mellitus or risk of it
  • hyperlipidaemia
  • cardiac disease
  • seizures
  • stroke
  • dysphagia
  • neutropenia
  • obstructive sleep apnoea
  • age < 18yrs not approved
  • pregnancy - use in 3rd TM may cause problems with the newborn
  • lactation - unknown safety

Potential adverse effects

  • drowsiness - avoid driving or use of machinery, or other sedatives including alcohol
  • hypotension
  • increase suicidality in young people
  • decrease perspiration and increase risk of heat illness in hot weather
  • increase appetite and weight gain, although this may be less than some other anti-psychotics
  • restlessness
  • hyperglycamia
  • hyperprolactinaemia
  • increased risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT)?
