Introduction
- an enteropathy characterised by raised levels of eosinophils in the gut and / or blood
- can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, and is often named by the part affected: colon (colitis), esophagus (oesophagitis), stomach (gastritis), or both the stomach and small intestine (eosinophilic gastroenteritis)
Aetiology
- food allergies
- parasites
Clinical features
- abdominal pains
- anorexia, nausea
- may develop blood in stools, gastro-oesophageal reflux, achalasia, skin rashes
Diagnosis
- endoscopy and biopsy to demonstrate the eosinophilia
- FBE may show eosinophilia
