Introduction
- a rare condition in which fluid filled cavities (syrinxes) occupy space in the lower part of the brainstem and can impair neuronal function via a pressure effect similar to that seen in syringomyelia with which it is often associated with
Aetiology
- may be caused by a birth defect, trauma or tumour growth
Clinical features
- may cause:
- neuropathic pain
- loss of temperature sensation
- central type II respiratory failure (raised CO2, hypoventilation)
- impaired muscle control of airways causing stridor and irregular breathing
Dx
- MRI brain
