Introduction

  • a rare condition in which fluid filled cavities (syrinxes) occupy space in the lower part of the brainstem and can impair neuronal function via a pressure effect similar to that seen in syringomyelia with which it is often associated with

Aetiology

  • may be caused by a birth defect, trauma or tumour growth

Clinical features

  • may cause:
    • neuropathic pain
    • loss of temperature sensation
    • central type II respiratory failure (raised CO2, hypoventilation)
    • impaired muscle control of airways causing stridor and irregular breathing

  • MRI brain
