Introduction
- an atypical anti-psychotic medication
- listed on Aust. PBS in late 2017 for Rx of schizophrenia, with the advantage of less weight gain or diabetic effects
Special precautions
- hypersensitivity to brexpiprazole
- dementia
- liver disease
- renal disease
- dementia
- diabetes mellitus or risk of it
- hyperlipidaemia
- cardiac disease
- seizures
- stroke
- dysphagia
- neutropenia
- obstructive sleep apnoea
- age < 18yrs not approved
- pregnancy - use in 3rd TM may cause problems with the newborn
- lactation - unknown safety
- deep venous thrombosis (DVT) risk factors
Potential adverse effects
- drowsiness - avoid driving or use of machinery, or other sedatives including alcohol
- hypotension
- increase suicidality in young people
- decrease perspiration and increase risk of heat illness in hot weather
- increase appetite and weight gain, although this may be less than some other anti-psychotics
- restlessness
- hyperglycamia
- hyperprolactinaemia
- increased risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT)?
- rarely:
- tardive dyskinesia which may be permanent
