Co-Phenylcaine Forte Spray
- excessive topical use may cause hypertensive crisis which may be fatal, and attempts to treat such alpha agonist crises with beta adrenergic blockers or calcium channel blockers may cause acute pulmonary oedema (APO) and thus these agents are contra-indicated!! 1)
- excessive topical use may cause lignocaine toxicity, seizures and death 2)
introduction
- a topical spray used in ENT procedures to simultaneously vasoconstrict and anaesthetise the upper airway
- contains:
- phenylephrine, an alpha adrenergic agonist type of sympathomimetic agent which acts as the vasoconstrictor agent
- 5% lignocaine which acts as a local anaesthetic agents
