glucagon
introduction
- a peptide hormone, produced by alpha cells of the pancreas, that raises blood glucose levels by stimulating gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis in the liver, and turns off glycolysis
- it can be also given parenterally to Rx hypoglycaemia, beta adrenergic blocker overdose and impacted food bolus in oesophagus
- it can also be given to patients on beta adrenergic blockers who develop anaphylaxis which is resistant to adrenaline / epinephrine Rx.

- adrenaline
- arginine
- alanine
- acetylcholine
secretion inhibited by
- insulin (via GABA)
- increased free fatty acids or keto acids in the blood
- increased urea production
C/I
adverse effects
- headache
- nausea
- hyperglycaemia
- hypertension
