vasopressin
argipressin (vasopressin / ADH)
introduction
- vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone or ADH) is a vasopressor (ie. causes vasoconstriction), and is also used in the management of diabetes insipidus and oesophageal variceal bleeding.
- as a vasopressor, it is sometimes used in sepsis / septicaemia or anaphylaxis refractory to sympathomimetics such as noradrenaline / norepinephrine and adrenaline / epinephrine respectaively.
adverse effects
- coronary ischaemia
- mesenteric ischaemia
- pulmonary vasoconstriction
- skin necrosis from peripheral infusion
- anaphylaxis has been observed after s/c or im injection
