Introduction
- simple gingivitis is very common and painless and mainly due to poor dental hygiene - see periodontitis
- acute ulcerative gingivitis is relatively common and painful, and usually caused by primary Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, or hand, foot and mouth infection in children

- occasionally, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis may occur
Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG)
- acute non-contagious severe gingivitis, most common in young adults or malnourished children
- it was called trench mouth in WWI soldiers
- painful, bleeding gums and ulceration and necrosis of the interdental papilla and usually is associated with halitosis
- may lead to necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis
