Introduction
- allodynia is pain felt with non-painful stimuli
- affects 15-50% of people with neuropathic pain
- hyperalgesia - increased sensitivity to painful stimuli is an increased sensitivity to painful stimuli
Types of allodynia
- dynamic allodynia (mechanical):
- pain results from an object such as clothing moving across your skin
- tactile allodynia (static or cutaneous allodynia):
- pain results from a gentle touch or pressure on your skin
- thermal allodynia:
- pain results from a mild change in temperature
Aetiology
- migraine
- cutaneous allodynia is said to occur in ~ 2/3rds of migraine sufferers
- trigeminal neuralgia
- diabetic neuropathic pain
- postherpetic neuralgia
- complex regional pain syndrome
- amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS)
- neuropathies
- alcohol use disorder
- fibromyalgia
