Introduction
- hyperalgesia is an increased sensitivity to painful stimuli
- allodynia - painful touch when there should not be pain is pain felt with non-painful stimuli
- affects 15-50% of people with neuropathic pain
Types of hyperalgesia
- referred hyperalgesia
- pain felt near a painful region
- this could be observational when seeing someone else in pain
- visceral hyperalgesia
- a form of deep pain
Aetiology
- NB. many of these causes can also cause allodynia - painful touch when there should not be pain
- excessive sensitivity of pain receptors
- burns
- trauma
- cellulitis
- toxins from bites or stings
- diabetic neuropathy
- opioid-induced hyperalgesia
- CNS viral infections: herpes zoster (shingles), Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
- migraines
- complex regional pain syndrome
