modified ARA criteria:
- ARA I:
- normal joint function = no disease
- ARA II:
- adequate function despite symptoms = early disease
- ARA III:
- reduced function but self-care possible = disease
- ARA IV:
- self-care precluded by dysfunction = severe disease
physical examination of joints:
- warmth
- effusion
- synovial thickening
- deformity
- range of motion
- pain on motion
- tenderness - generalised/localised; articular/peri-articular;
systematic characterisation of joint dysfunction
- dysfunction = loss of normal function
- disability = impairment of activity by joint dysfunction
- handicap = effect of dysfunction on fulfillment of a role
assessment of daily functional capacity or activities of daily living (ADLs):
- mobility:
- getting out of bed
- negotiating stairs
- public transport
- ability to wash:
- using toilet, shaving, brushing teeth, cutting nails, bathing
- dressing:
- buttons, zips, laces, shoes, socks, combing hair
- feeding:
- preparing food; making tea; using cutlery; administration of medications;
- chewing; swallowing;
- housework:
- turning taps, keys, dials
- making beds; using telephone; hanging washing
