Introduction

  • hypertrophic skin like lesions which individually look like keloid scars

DDx

  • keloid scar
  • dermatofibromas
    • usually non-inflamed
  • xanthomas
    • contain yellowish lipids
  • lobomycosis
    • fibrotic, keloid-like nodules that develop slowly over years
    • chains of thick-walled yeast-like fungal Lacazia loboi cells
    • infection occurs through traumatic implantation into the dermis, and the fungus does not spread person-to-person1)
  • skin metastases
  • neurofibromas
  • cutaneous lymphoma
  • cutaneous sarcoidosis
  • disseminated reticulohistiocytosis
    • a rare form of histiocytosis
    • usually looks more like multiple non-inflamed sub-cutaneous nodules rather than keloids
    • rare in Australia
    • in 90% of patients, the first symptom noticed is numbness with temperature being the first sensation lost, followed by light touch, pain, and then deep pressure, and this may precede rash by years2)
    • eg. histoid leprosy
  • ?cutaneous leishmaniasis
    • not acquired in Australia (from sand fly bites)
  • ?lupus vulgaris
