Introduction

  • in 1687, Cestoni: discovered the mite, ascaris, as the cause of scabies
  • scabies is a very easily spread skin condition caused by the mite burrowing under the skin and causing very pruritic, often linear lesions

Clinical features

  • pruritic, often linear skin lesions which tend to be on the web spaces on hands, forearms, breasts, peri-umbilical region in particular
  • they rarely affect the scalp or face except in cases of Norwegian scabies

Diagnosis

  • microscopic examination of the contents of skin burrows to reveal the mite
  • however, often it is a clinical diagnosis
