Introduction
- in 1687, Cestoni: discovered the mite, ascaris, as the cause of scabies
- scabies is a very easily spread skin condition caused by the mite burrowing under the skin and causing very pruritic, often linear lesions
Clinical features
- pruritic, often linear skin lesions which tend to be on the web spaces on hands, forearms, breasts, peri-umbilical region in particular
- they rarely affect the scalp or face except in cases of Norwegian scabies
Diagnosis
- microscopic examination of the contents of skin burrows to reveal the mite
- however, often it is a clinical diagnosis

- 2 doses of oral ivermectin to a population infested with scabies has been shown to be more effective than mass treatment with topical permethrin 1)
