Introduction
- chemotherapy is a general term used mainly for systemic use of cytotoxic anti-cancer drugs which kill rapidly dividing cells such as cancer cells
- ~30% of individuals with cancer, and thus approximately 10% of the whole population in developed countries, are exposed to chemotherapy at some point in their lifetime 1)
- chemotherapy can have long-term side effects on normal tissues. It confers an increased risk of cancers of the blood, lung, bladder and colon and is sometimes toxic to the kidney, blood, heart, brain, gastrointestinal tract, peripheral nervous system and gonads, engendering long-term deterioration in organ function 2)
